the Blickensderfer Manufacturing Company.

Then in the whiz-bang 1970's the now defunct Wang Laboratories introduced what was really the first word processor. Think electronic typewriter with memory. These evolved through the years - I remember one in my dad's office at one point - but were eventually displaced by the PC. The PC could load a word processing application and connect to a printer and emulate what the single purpose word processor could do, plus a whole lot more.

So we get the PC with the software word processor with which we can create and edit and print documents (oh yes, I remember using Word Perfect on DOS when Word Perfect was an independent company!). As email began to percolate into the workplace it became a way to exchange word processor documents between coworkers; no more printing and exchanging documents and memos before the final draft.

But the problem is that this stream of innovations is entirely concerned with documents. The report that was moved from the typewriter to the hardware word processor to the software word processor was moved about as a document. Each advance was designed to do better what the previous iteration did. But the document doesn't matter. As paper it's a physical means to an abstract end, the advance of ideas, the exchange of information.

This is surely no big deal, but it highlights the problem that we all - that everyone - faces with new technology. We get hung up on the means and all too often the metaphor (file folders, really?) and lose sight of the purpose. That idea doesn't need to be communicated in a document. It can be written up in a blog or a wiki. That message can be sent via email or IM or microblog. We get stuck on the last iteration of our attempt to solve the problem, and forget about the actual problem we were trying to solve in the first place.

Don't believe me?

Do you have a large storage space at the back of your car? (or worse yet, inoperable protective coverings nailed next to your windows.

Air Travel Reward Cards, The Dark Side

  • Oct. 3rd, 2008 at 1:31 PM
In these cases, the 250 word statement might come into play, but the deciding factor will still most likely be your overall credit score.
Now, to answer the question, yes there are right and wrong ways to use your 250 statement. Right ways would include an explanation of why it benefited you to close the account, identity theft, or an explanation of a late payment or complicated account.
The wrong way to use your 250 word statement would be to air grievances with your credit card company or other lender! Prospective lenders really do not want to hear about the time your credit card company processed your payment late, and refused to issue you a credit. They also dont want to see that you frequently argued with your creditors if they are about to become one of them!
If you have a problem with your bank or credit card company, be sure to take it up with them, or with the Better Business Bureau. Do not attach it to your own credit report - your credit card company will never see it, and it will only make you look bad in the long run.
So, with that said, lets get down to some specific examples.
For instance, most of us love to take advantage of those credit cards, especially around Christmas. So, lets say you opened up a credit card to take advantage of the 30% to 50% off deal they were having. After Christmas, you paid the card off and closed it. You would want to go back into your credit report, and make a note that says something to this effect:
I opened up this credit account to take advantage of a special discount. When the special offer ended, I paid off the card, and closed it because it no longer benefited me. I have other credit cards with excellent interest rates, and the default interest rate on this one was 24%.

Another good instance would be balance transfer accounts. You open them to take advantage of the low, or 0% interest for a specific period of time. Your notation could look something like this:
I opened this credit account so that I could take advantage of the 0% interest on balance transfers. Once I paid the balance down, (or the rate expired) I closed the account because of the high annual fee and increased interest rate.
Or, if you are in the process of streamlining your credit accounts - you have too many and dont want to deal with them all - you could say something like this:
It is my belief that using credit responsibly means having only the number of credit accounts that I can safely and happily manage. I rarely charged anything on this card, and since I have other lines of credit that I prefer to use instead, I closed this account. The cards I kept had better interest rates, and lower fees.
In an identity theft situation, you would want to challenge the item on your credit report as well as make a statement. Hopefully you can have any derogatory information removed permanently. In case of identity theft you can use this notation:

This account is/was in dispute. I had my identity stolen on (date). All or part of the charges made on this card were made by someone other than myself. The late payments that show up are because I had no knowledge of the account (or because I am not obligated to pay for charges I did not make).
If you got ticked off with your credit card company and closed the account, and you absolutely positively must note it on your own credit report, you could put it like this:
The incredibly rude and unhelpful customer service representatives that this company employs made it more worth my while to close this account than to keep it open.
Basically the goal with the 250 word statement is to show a valid reason for closing or disputing an account. In cases like that, the truth is always best.
If you closed the account because you didnt use the card, say so. If you closed it because the credit card company sold your information to every telemarketer in India (Im talking to you HSBC Bank - watch out!) then say so.
Always keep in mind though, that what goes on this report is a permanent record. Your permanent record. So choose your words carefully!
Thanks again for your question Matt.

During cataract eye surgery, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with a plastic one.
One method is called Phacoemulsification which involves using ultrasound to break up the cataract.
A small incision is made in the eye and suction is used to remove the cataract.
After the cataract is successfully removed, an intraocular lens is implanted.
This lens becomes a permanent part of your eye and you can`t see it or feel it.
Another method of removing the clouded lens involves Extracapsular surgery.
A longer incision is made on the side of the cornea and the core of the cloudy lens is removed in one piece.
The rest of the lens is removed by suction.
Discuss the benefits and risks of each with your doctor.
Unlike Lasik eye surgery, most cataract eye surgery patients will still need to wear prescription glasses.
Cataract eye surgery enjoys an impressive 98 percent success rate and as it is considered a necessary, rather than cosmetic surgery, insurance usually covers the cost.

Airlines are looking for whatever they can do to cut cost to try to keep their airplanes in the air. There has been a small amount of airlines that have been able to get by this mess without laying any of their staff off, mainly Southwest Airlines which is still profitable. The major airlines like American, Northwest, and Delta have all had to layoff a large amount of their work forces. A direct result of this is that the number of flights being offered has been cut back. The major airlines cannot keep going to smaller cities because its starting to spread themselves thin. The profit to be made is much smaller and the flights are not as full. No point having two flights out of a small airport air day that are half full when one flight that is full will make it profitable.
The main reason behind all of this is the rising cost of jet fuel and the economy. People are not traveling as much themselves due to job layoffs and this housing mess. Middle class America makes up for a large number of travelers in the friendly skies and when they are not flying then the airline industry has no choice but to scale back.
So after the restructuring of their employees where are the airlines going to look next for cost savings. Most have already eliminated the free peanuts or pretzels. Some have stopped offering a free beverage and before you know it a glass of water is not going to be complimentary either. Who knows how much money the airlines save by cutting back on all of these freebies, its probably in the million over the span of the year but its probably hurting them more in the customer service area. Now, most passengers are going to have to just realize that this is their bus and to sit down and shut-up for the next 4 hours.
Okay, so now the food, I mean snacks are not free anymore and a bag of pretzels that costs $.50 at Sams Club is now $2 on the plane. Well, the frequent flyers are going to start feeling the pinch next. The airlines are realizing that if they want to have a frequent flyer program or get into the credit card industry and make some money off of interest that they cannot have black out dates. A black out date is when the airlines say you cannot use your frequent flyer airline miles credit cardĀ for certain flights or on certain days. These are usually the days most people travel like a Saturday morning for example. Ticket prices are always higher because most travelers take a week off of work and vacation on a Saturday to Saturday schedule. If you ever pay attention to airline ticket prices you will see that the price of an airline ticket is sometimes 100% more on a Saturday than a Friday. The airlines know your schedule and can raise prices because you are not flexible in your traveling times.
So the airlines no longer say they participate in black out dates but know they just limit the amount of free flights aboard a particular flight. You have to look at it from the airlines point of view. They could charge $500 for a plane ticket to lets say 100 people traveling to Cancun, Mexico and make $50,000 in revenue from that flight or let as many people that have one of their airline miles credit cardĀ and use it whenever they want cutting into per flight revenues. So the same flight that had 100 full paying customers now has 50 people all cashing in their airline miles at the same time. Now the flight is only going to get $25,000 in revenue which probably barely pays the flight crews salary, the loan on the plane, fuel, and other things to get the plane there. The airlines just cannot absorb that big of a revenue cut on a flight. They must spread this over a bunch of flights because this flight is their money maker. Remember if you fly out on Friday the flight is probably half the price and the airline would rather you fly then so they can charge full price the next day to make up for your cheap seat the day before.
You are not going to hear how many seats they are cutting but estimates are that each flight is now going to have half as many flights designated to people with frequent flyer miles programs. Its not that the airline does not want to honor your miles its just theat they cannot afford to have a bunch of people cashing them in at one time.
So what does this mean to the person who used their airline credit card for their families family vacation? It means that you are going to have to be flexible. Try not to save you air miles for that one big trip a year if you make many trips through out the year. No point in saving them all thinking you are going to be able to fly your family for free and get everybody on the same plane. Too much risk doing that right now. Be willing to travel on off days. The airline credit cards are based on what ticket prices are for that day so if you travel on an off day like a tuesday morning you can probably get your free flight and still have some air miles left over for your next flight.
Flexibility is going to be the word of the future in the airline industry. This is going to be the only way that you are going to make sense out of your airline miles and still think that they are worth it. It does make sense to have a air mile credit card but now you need to be smart with it.

Air Issues

  • Jun. 24th, 2008 at 11:21 PM

So whats a girl to do this summer? I was really relying on cheap airfare for the summer. I need some suggestions for a good August destination with outdoor adventures stat! Im thinking now I should just try to go to the boundary waters in Minnesota or do something in the Midwest. Which kind of sucks because I really love meeting people from all over, learning about the history and culture of new regions and GETTING FAR AWAY with my long vacation time.
