Wisconsin Green Building Alliance/Milwaukee, WIThe Wisconsin Green Building Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with over 250 member companies dedicated to promoting sustainable building in Wisconsin. We are an affiliate of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), a regional leader in green building and sustainability, and currently located in Milwaukee, WI.
The WGBA is seeking an Executive Director who is passionate about sustainability and organizational excellence. The Executive Director will oversee all aspects of the organization consistent with the vision of the WGBA, which is the recognized leader of sustainable building in Wisconsin.

JOB DESCRIPTION – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Executive Directors primary duties will include carrying out the administrative, financial, event planning, communications and membership support consistent with the vision, mission and strategic plan of the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance.
Outreach to Membership (30%)
The WGBA is an organization that is almost entirely driven by volunteers. The Executive Director will be expected to help increase volunteerism from WGBA membership, partner organizations and the community.
• Work with the Board and Member Circles to organize events and activities that provide value for Chapter members and the community, including but not limited to:
o LEEDâ„¢ User Groups
o Membership Meetings
o Educational Events
o LEEDâ„¢ Technical Workshops
o LEEDâ„¢ Building Tours
o Newsletter
o Website
o Special Projects
• Raise visibility of Chapter and increase relevancy within community context.
• Develop partnerships and alliances with government, community and private entities to further Chapter goals and objectives.
• Serve as informational conduit about green building practices, standards, market dynamics and their associated benefits.
• Serve as Chapter representative to local, regional and national constituencies.
• Assist statewide chapter expansion through branch development in areas to be determined. Areas will likely include Madison, Fox Valley, Western Wisconsin, and Northern Wisconsin.
• Assist implementation of member circles through various practice sectors, including new construction, existing buildings, commercial interiors, neighborhood development, healthcare, etc.
Financials and Fundraising (30%)
The WGBA seeks to increase its ability to effectively serve its members and the community by consistently seeking sponsorships, membership contributions and other financial assets.
• Develop and implement a fundraising strategy with help of Board of Directors and serve as the primary point of contact for donors.
• Oversee staff and volunteer management of Chapter finances, including all reporting obligations.
• Work with the Treasurer and/or Accountant in supervising the financial management or the Chapter including budget preparation, financial reporting and analysis, monitoring budget and ensuring fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
• Work with the Treasurer and/or Accountant to ensure maintenance of 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.
Connection to USGBC National, Heartland Region and other USGBC Chapters (20%)
WGBA is dedicated to collaborating with our partner organizations in Wisconsin and in our region. We actively participate in the USGBC Heartland Region (14 chapters in 11 Midwestern states) and with our colleagues at USGBC National.
• Serve as point-of-contact to and collaborate with USGBC and other chapters; stay informed on all LEED, chapter best practices and chapter-related issues.
• Participate in chapter administrator and executive director conference calls
• Use USGBC chapter extranet to manage chapter information
• Complete and submit annual chapter activity report (and associated documentation) to USGBC National
Organizational Management Board of Directors (20%)
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the consistent achievement of the chapters mission and financial objectives. The Executive Director is expected to continue to develop a thriving organization by growing the membership, expanding and improving the programs and services offered to the members and the community, increasing fundraising, and by providing a highly-visible presence for the organization.
• Generally perform duties normally associated with the Executive Director of a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation.
• Attend and participate in all meetings of the Chapter Board of Directors (Board) but do not sit on the Board as a voting member.
• Serve as a primary staff contact to the Board.
• Support the Board with materials necessary to perform its leadership role.
• Implement Chapter policies and procedures with approval of the Board.
• Manage the Chapters administrative staff including interns to provide effective use of staff time for the benefit of the Chapter.
• Assist in identifying needs for additional human resources (e.g. administrative staff, assist with recruitment, hiring and budgeting for staff positions, etc.).
• Prepare Chapter annual report for membership, stakeholders.
• Ensure appropriate and adequate insurance coverage for the Board and Chapter.
• Ensure compliance with all State and Federal regulations.
DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to the timely and effective execution of duties as outlined above and developed over time in collaboration with the Board, the Executive Directors conduct must reflect and advance the integrity and intentions of the Chapter. As Executive Director of the Chapter, the Board will look to the Executive Director to excel in the following areas:
Working Relations: The Chapter views collaborative partnership as a sound foundation for effective working relations. We recognize aspects of mutual commitment between staff and Board as we work together to advance a common vision. We anticipate the Board and Director will forge collegial, supportive and rewarding working relations.
Code of Conduct: The Chapter aspires to embody characteristics of inclusiveness, civility, transparency and accountability in its deliberations and activities. We anticipate that the Executive Director will establish and maintain open and participatory dynamics as a leader of the organization.
Professional Development: The Chapter intends to maintain a cutting edge awareness of green building practices and linkages to sustainability and livability considerations. Education is integral to this leadership position. The Executive Director will actively work to obtain LEEDâ„¢ Professional Accreditation within one year of employment with training assistance from the Chapter.
Institutional Presence: The Chapter prioritizes a high degree of professional and personal decorum in all its public and private interactions. We anticipate the Director to establish and maintain a stellar image of the Chapter in all materials, presentations and personal conduct.
Livability: The Chapter supports its staff in their pursuit of meaningfulness and satisfaction. Family and other personal matters is a cornerstone of livability and do not necessarily conform to a 9:00-5:00 schedule. We expect the Executive Director to exercise appropriate discretion as to work hours and routine in pursuit of balanced priorities between professionalism, efficacy and livability.
Sustainability: The Chapter seeks to integrate sustainability considerations within all facets of business, education, and outreach. The Executive Director, along with the Board, should ensure a “Walk our Talk†attitude in pursuit of the Chapters Mission, including taking into account the Triple Bottom Line when making organizational decisions.
Other Duties as Needed: This list is not an exhaustive list and the Executive Director will be given additional job responsibilities as needed and directed by the Board of Directors.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Passion Passionate about and engaged in environmental and social issues and a strong desire to promote green building and further the Chapters mission.
Education A bachelors degree or higher in business administration or environmental science/sustainability or related field. Other, relevant degrees will be considered.
Management Three (3) or more years of experience with for-profit or non-profit organizational management.
Results Orientation - Action oriented; seizes opportunities; can be counted on to move tasks and assignments toward closure; steadfastly pushes self and others for results.
Prioritization - Spends his/her time and the time of others on whats important; quickly zeros in on the critical objectives; can quickly sense what will help or hinder accomplishing a goal; eliminates roadblocks; creates focus.
Communication Skills Public Speaking - Strong communication skills including writing, preparing presentations and public speaking. Able to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles; can get messages across that have the desired effect; clearly articulates the key points of an issue; keeps the attention of others; takes recipients needs into account when speaking or writing.
Planning and Organizing - Experience with strategic and business planning including financial
management, budgeting and bookkeeping. Can marshal people, funding, material, and support to get things done; can orchestrate multiple activities at once; uses resources effectively and efficiently; accurately scopes out length and difficulty of tasks and projects; sets objectives and goals; breaks down work into the process steps; develops schedules and task; anticipates and adjusts for problems and roadblocks.
Technical Knowledge – Has at least a basic understanding of all the principles and methods of ecologically sustainable materials and practices in the building industry, and an expertise in at least two categories.
Business Acumen - Knows how businesses work; is knowledgeable in current and possible future, practices, trends, and information affecting his/her business and organization; is aware of how strategies and tactics work in the marketplace.
Conflict Management - Experience with project management and interpersonal skills
Openly manages conflict and disagreement through collaborative discussion to reach positive conclusions or decisions; arrives at constructive solutions while maintaining positive working relationships; sees win-win situations.
COMPENSATION
The WGBA seeks an entrepreneurial talent to fill this position and will create a compensation package commensurate with the preferred candidates experience.
Financial Incentives
Base salary with potential incentives linked to achievement of specific objectives determined at time of annual review. Opportunities for additional bonuses may be available for meeting agreed-on performance goals.

Education/Professional Development
WGBA supports the professional development of its staff and will support the Executive Director to gain relevant professional education in the field of green building, including LEEDâ„¢ Accreditation, LEEDâ„¢ Technical Workshops and/or other appropriate educational opportunities.
Travel (primarily within Wisconsin and regionally)
The Executive Director will be asked to travel both within the state of Wisconsin and to regional and national events sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, such as the Greening the Heartland conference and Greenbuild.
Review: Annual performance and salary review with Executive Committee
Location: The WGBA office is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The organization is open to discussing whether its future Executive Director may reside in either Milwaukee, WI or Madison, WI. Relocation expenses are negotiable, based on the candidate.
Timeline: This position will remain open until the appropriate candidate is identified.
OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES AND CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
In the interest of promoting success for the Chapter, while under the terms of this agreement the Director will not assist any business or organization a) in competing with the Chapter, b) in preparing to compete with the Chapter, or c) in hiring any employees of the Chapter.
While employed by the Chapter, the Director is expected to immediately report to the Board Chair any financial, organizational or institutional interests or relationships that might be construed as a Conflict of Interest. The Director will be required to sign, follow and enforce USGBCs Conflict of Interest Policy.
